The current theatre was officially opened on 19 January 2000, with LADS’ first production (Cinderella) starting two days later.
This is believed to be the first theatre to be opened in the new millennium anywhere in the world.
However, this is not the first theatre on this site.
In 1956 LADS started leasing the Church Room, which had been built in 1910 as a mission hall. Over the years the theatre was gradually improved and it was re-named the Church Room Theatre and then later The Market Theatre.
This ‘run down tin hut’ was to be their home for the next 43 years, until it was demolished in March 1999 to make way for the new building.

How it works
The Market Theatre is owned by LADS and operates as a community theatre space for the benefit of everyone.
It is run and maintained entirely by a group of dedicated volunteers.
As well as hosting all LADS theatrical productions, the Market Theatre also offers a successful film club, live screenings from national venues, visiting theatrical companies and music events of all genres.
More details can be found on the Market Theatre website.
